In a partnership with 11th Ward neighbors, Maureen Sullivan presents 11th Ward Tax Tricks: an eye-opening free town hall session that uncovers where millions in your tax money is really going in the 11th Ward.

It’s not to schools, it’s not to filling potholes, it’s not to police or services.

It’s to politically connected developers.  The kind of already-wealthy folks that are represented by corporate lawyer Patrick Daley Thompson.

Our December 4th event at First Trinity stars Tom Tresser of the award-winning TIF Illumination Workshop. In 2013, Maureen organized Tom’s appearance at McKinley Park Library – come and see the new research, updated after the redraw of our 11th Ward map boundaries.

11th Ward Tax Tricks will tell you what no other candidate in this race will: who’s getting paid with millions in your tax money.

Tom Tresser (left) and his TIF Illumination Workshop have been making the rounds in Chicago sharing the painstaking research of Tom’s team at CivicLab. His discoveries of hundreds of millions of tax dollars sitting idle in politically connected banks get the attention of voters, but the stories of where the money goes have made people want to grab pitchforks in anger.

Outright payments of millions of dollars at a a time – not loans, payments – to already-existing businesses all over Chicago are commonly dished out to campaign contributors with no obligations whatsoever to do anything with the money but put it in their pockets.

The TIF program is supposed to be about creating jobs and reducing blight. But what it usually does is hand a giant check with no strings attached to someone – often a political contributor – already doing business in the area. Nobody checks on jobs created or improvements made. In fact, nobody checks if the company closes up shop and moves out of the neighborhood after it gets its loot – and that’s happened plenty of times.

The 11th Ward office — aka Maureen’s opponent Patrick Daley Thompson and Alderman James Balcer — would never, ever tell you about TIF handouts.

But Maureen Sullivan has been talking about TIFs for years with neighbors. She organized 2013’s 11th and 12th Ward TIF Workshop with Tom in the McKinley Park library. It was a packed house, and people learned that their tax money is being hijacked– and they’re getting nothing for it.

Come to this town hall to learn where the money goes!  Learn about the 11th Ward Tax Tricks that you’re paying for!
